FOR A FULL SCHEDULE PLEASE VISIT: www.jozifilmfestival.co.za

Now the first festival on the yearly South African film festival calendar, Jozi Film Festival is a new annual event that showcases the latest films made by Johannesburg and Gauteng film-makers as well as provides a space for film-makers, local or international, to tell stories about Jozi and her inhabitants. This year, we are happy to announce that the South African premiere of Man On Ground, a film by Akin Omotoso, will be opening the festival at The Bioscope Independent Cinema at Main Street Life, Fox St on Friday, 10 February at 7:00pm. Films will also be shown in the unusual venue of the Kensington Club, Ivanhoe Street, Kensington which will also host the final film of the festival: Semi-Soet, the new Afrikaans romantic comedy on 12 February. That screening will take place at 4:00pm to be followed by the JFF Awards Ceremony, presented by John Vlismas and Nthati Moshesh.

So what makes JFF different from the rest is a drive to make the films accessible to a wide audience and to attract those who don’t traditionally attend film festivals; an attempt to engage and inspire the ordinary people who make Jo’burg tick. With no intention of becoming the Cannes of Southern Africa, Jozi Film Festival rather aims to reflect the energetic and creative vibe of the city and the continent and wants to encourage Jo’burgers to see their city as a fantastic place to meet new people, experience something uniquely “Jozi” and leave with a sense that we live in an incredible metropolis where there’s truly never a dull moment. In keeping with this idea, admission is a very low R20 and some screenings will be free. JFF hopes to grow the satellite festival in 2013 and reach many more Gautengers across the province as time goes on.

The festival will also provide opportunities for new-comers and industry professionals to network. Jozi Film Festival also offers provocative Q&A sessions with the filmmakers in attendance as well as a number of workshops. Within the festival is also a Short Fiction Festival (The Bioscope, Saturday 11 February at 4:00pm) and a Student Festival (The Bioscope, Saturday 11 February at 8:30pm). Competition categories include: Best Feature Film, Best Documentary Film, Best Fiction Short, Best Student Film, and an

Audience Choice Award. Winner of Best Feature Film will receive a one-year unlimited music license from Final Mix Online (cleared across all media, in perpetuity) while Best Documentary Film and Best Fiction Short will each receive an unlimited music license for a single production. Recipient of the Audience Choice Award will win the chance to kick back and enjoy an all-expenses paid dinner for 6 at Jo’burg’s trendy Darkie Café.

Wits School of Arts Film and TV Division is partnering with the festival – they will provide technical support, promote the festival to their students as well as students from other universities as well as host a series of seminars between screenings. Various sponsors have ensured that this event gets off to a strong start – all involved in the organization of the festival are voluntarily donating their time and expertise out of a passion to see JFF become a high point on South African film festival calendar.

The final list of films, along with screening times and a schedule of all events taking place over 10-12 February will be released shortly.

Please visit our website (www.jozifilmfestival.co.za) and Facebook page (Jozi Film Festival) for more information about this new experience about to hit the vibrant city of Jo’burg.

Bored and neglected, Genevieve turns to Robin, a working class local, for companionship. When Sebastian forms a bond of his own with Robin, Genevieve finds herself overpowered by jealousy and insecurity. Tensions mount between the two women and soon reality and jealousy fantasy become inseparable in this haunting meditation on jealousy and the ways women mistreat and manipulate one another.

The internationally acclaimed documentary film PUNK IN AFRICA will make its first appearance in local cinemas this month. Directed by Keith Jones and Deon Maas, the film will be screened at the Labia Cinema on Orange in Cape Town on 17 January and the Bioscope in Johannesburg from 20-27 January.

The film has been invited to be officially unveiled at the world-renowned International Film Festival Rotterdam on 29-31 January, following successful local and international premieres at the Durban International Film Festival in July 2011 and the Festival Do Rio in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil in October 2011. The film has also been selected as an official entry at the One World Film Festival in March 2012 in Prague, Czech Republic, Europe’s most prestigious festival of human rights and political documentaries.

PUNK IN AFRICA is the untold story of the multi-racial punk movement within recent political and social upheavals in three Southern African countries: South Africa, Mozambique and Zimbabwe. In this context the punk subculture represented a genuinely radical impulse, set against political struggle, economic hardship and even civil war. The story unfolds from the Johannesburg underground rock scene of the 1970s, the multi-racial punk bands formed in the wake of the Soweto Uprising and the anti-apartheid sounds of the 1980s to the rise of African-inspired ska-punk from Cape Town to Maputo in the democratic 1990s. Today an emerging generation of new music confronts contemporary political challenges in Zimbabwe and Afrikaans identity politics in South Africa, as the scene also begins to spread across the African continent.

“…bursting with the heyday of the multiracial punk scene…with a loving emphasis on the surprising – and often overlooked – role that punk music played in Africa.” – NAT GEO MUSIC

“…a period which remains a mystery even to most connoisseurs of the genre…regardless of whether or not you have any vested interest in punk music, the film is compelling and socially valuable.” – OKAYAFRICA

“Deon Maas and Keith Jones’ doccie Punk In Africa…aims to liberate pop-culture discourse from its silly racial laagers.” – Bongani Madondo, ROLLING STONE SA

The film is a co-production between SAFTA-awarded Johannesburg production company Meerkat Media and Prague-based independent producers Peligroso Productions and Bohemian Lion and is represented for international sales and festivals by Rise and Shine Films in Berlin, Germany. Production was sponsored in part by the National Film and Video Foundation of South Africa, Red Bull Media Group (Austria) and the noted European post-production studio UPP (Czech Republic).
